Selvedge Magazine

I can across Selvedge through a recommendation from a friend. He said it was full of “yummy stuff” that I would like. Crafty, textilie, artie… Well I managed to get myself a copy earlier this week and I must admit I am very impressed!

The strapline is “The fabric of your life: textiles in fashion, fine art, interiors, travel and shopping”. I actually found it to be a lot more and ended up reading it from cover to cover.

Whilst I review a lot of magazines – this is not a dedicated “knitting/crochet” magazine, but it is definitely one for those with a love for all things arty, fabrics, textiles and yarns. The price of the magazine whilst is on the more expensive end at £8.50 per issue, it is of superior print and bind quality. At roughly 100 pages with selective and limited advertising, I definitely felt it was worth it.

I liked it so much I decided that Yarn Box should be stocking it and have now brought it into the shop. Click here to find out more… We have put together a great subscription offer with a choice of gift of either Zen Yarns or a Mili Silke Bag. P&P will also be free for all UK subscribers.

More for charity

Filed under: Uncategorized — yarnbox @ 3:36 pm

It has been busy on many fronts, YB, Project A and officework. Yesterday was officially the most depressing day of the year! How was your day? January seems to be taking longer and longer… whilst I need time to slow down for Project A which has a timed deadline, I also feel like we have been in January for a very long time now and Christmas feels like it happened months ago!
I am glad that is behind me and I now have 364 less depressing days to look forward to. My headache finally subsided on Sunday evening after about 5 days of attack.

My car decided to join the general pessimistic mood and broke down on Saturday. It then got towed on Monday (because there is no towing services at weekends??!!) and a bill which I don’t even want to think about! I get it back on Thursday and look forward to it very much. Even though I am angry with it, I miss it.

This episode has made me realise how much we rely on our automobiles. Chigwell is not exactly in the middle of nowhere, but equally I don’t have shops on my doorstep. Given the pleasing weather on Sunday I decided to go on a long walk with Lewis. It took me an hour to get to my local Tescos. Lewis was thrilled. I don’t think I have ever gone on such a long walk with him. We have in the past made it as far as the post office (which would be about half the distance). I think I would probably do these walks more often (weather permitting). We even discovered a bike shop which opened on Sunday. This would be a shop I would have driven past everyday – and failed to even know it was there.

On the brighter side – I came back to a lovely surprise yesterday. About 8 bags of yarn donated by a customer and her friend to charity.

Since our charity giveaway in October, we have kept a list of charities who are in need of donations. The list is predominantly baby charities, but we also have some for aged, shelter and more. As a result of this list we have been able to take in yarn of all sorts and find it a suitable home. I will be preparing the donated yarn for post outs in the next fortnight, so if you have more to donate or have a charity who can make use of oddments of yarn let me know.

For yarns donated we make a full reimbursement for postage for sending the yarn to us and a discount code to use with your next purchase.

times like this

Filed under: Uncategorized — yarnbox @ 11:49 pm

It is at “times like this” when everything around you seems to be going wrong that you miss those you are closest to. I wish it is a Sunday afternoon right now – so I can snuggle up in front of the TV with Lewis.

Everything is going well at Yarn Box – no worries there… in fact we will be looking to bring in more names in Spring… more news on that later.

There is just another big part of me that is not going so well. It has given me a headache since 2 days ago. I am a diagnosed migraine sufferer, but I seldom get the big attacks, just more prone to headaches than the average. But for the past two days I have literally had a heavy head!

To cheer me up – here are some photos of Lewis and me on New Years Day in Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland:

Bags and bags

Filed under: Uncategorized — yarnbox @ 2:46 pm

For the past week – poor Project A has been neglected and replaced by Yarn Box updates!

A newsletter went out with the January sales items and news of the exciting Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn.

Today I am busy still updating with more bags… all are lovely and all are lovely – but taken a lot of time to photograph etc. Any my temperamental broadband connection is really not helping. Currently I am with Virgin Media – anyone has any good recommendations!
